Keep the candle wick short
When you light the candle, first make sure that the wick is not too long. A long wick makes the candle flicker or smoke. This makes the glass jar black on the inside, but more importantly: the candle does not burn nicely and evenly. As a result, the sides of the wax do not melt or only melt on one side. This creates a tunnel that gets deeper and deeper after each burn and the total burn time is considerably shorter. Therefore, cut the wick to about half a centimeter in size. Check the wick length before each burn.
Avoid draft
Do not place the candle in a place where there is a lot of draft. The draft causes the flame to flutter with the result that the candle burns out faster on one side than on the other. If drafts cannot be avoided, rotate the candle now and then so that all sides are level again. Of course, the same problem arises when the scented candle is placed on a slanted surface, so always check that the candle is level before lighting it. If a tunnel or wax build-up does occur on the sides, cut off the uneven edges so that the surface of the candle is level again.
Prevent overheating
The following applies to all burns: never let the candle burn for more than three hours in a row to prevent overheating. You can easily recognize overheating, because the entire candle becomes liquid. The wick then swims and moves, so that the candle no longer burns evenly and creates a tunnel. The best is when you see a melted layer of wax floating on top of the candle, while the rest of the candle remains hard. By avoiding overheating, you also ensure that the candle burns out less quickly.

If, despite these tips, the scented candle does not burn nicely, wrap the glass holder in aluminum foil. Leave a little open at the top so that the candle does not go out. The aluminum jacket allows the wax to melt better, so also the wax that sticks to the sides. This trick can help to get your candle beautiful again.
