Girl with a Pearl Earring, or not?
Everybody knows the name of this painting; Girl with a Pearl Earring. There are even Hollywood movies and books named after it, and yet this was not the original name of the artwork. Until 1995 the painting carried the name Girl with a Turban, which pointed towards the blue and yellow headscarf the girl is wearing. But there was one item that really stole all the attention; the pearl earring. The Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, where the painting is on display, choose to change the name and Girl with a Pearl Earring was born. A few years later there was a discussion wether they should change the name again, when art experts decided that her earring can't possibly be a real pearl, but to avoid confusion they never changed the name again. She will now forever be known as the Girl with a Pearl Earring.
