The Goldfinch might be the most famous bird in the world. This small little bird looks at you directly, while his little leg is attached to a chain. The painter Carel Fabritius painted the finch with bold strokes and the only color that stands out is the yellow feather in the wing. Our very own master painters took the bird out of its sober painting, surrounded it with lush pastel flowers and added it to a wall plate. Fabritius was seen as one of the founders of the Delft School, just like Johannes Vermeer was. Fabritius tragically died in 1654 when he was caught in the explosion of a Delft gunpowder magazine. They think a lot of his paintings were destroyed in the explosion, but the Goldfinch still lives on. Now you can admire this beautiful little bird from your own home. Heinen Delfts Blauw added this artwork to the special collection, because both painters were part of the Delft School and shared a special connection to the city of Delft. This way we use the eyes of these talented artists to take a closer look at our shared history, because this was also the time and place when the production of Delft blue pottery took flight.
