Heinen Delfts Blauw
“Delft blue vases that tell the story of the bicycle”

Sylvain Tegroeg, designer of 'De Blauwe Fiets':

Delft blue is part of the Dutch tradition, but so is the bicycle, especially in the eyes of the foreign visitors. This inspired the French designer Sylvain Tegroeg to create the series of vases called 'De Blauwe Fiets' (The blue bycicle). These are fresh and modern objects that honour the Delft blue tradition.

Sylvain Tegroeg is a Frenchman who lives and works in Amsterdam. Tegroeg is a multidisciplinary designer that creates product designs, but also illustrations. Both of his specialities come together in the series of vases 'De Blauwe Fiets'. “With these vases I hope to add something new to the Heinen Delft Blue collection. My idea behind the collection is to bring the Delft blue back to our time, while honouring its long tradition in regards to colour choices and the craftwork involved.”

Unity that makes sense

Sylvain started by designing five shapes for his vases in 3D. He then discussed his results with Heinen Delft Blue and together they picked three vases, with each the same length of 21 cm high. You can buy the vases separately, but the three together form a logical unity. “Together with the technical staff of Heinen Delft Blue we thought about the technical possibilities and we developed prototypes. Once that was finished, I could start thinking about the illustrations.”

Bicycles

Quite soon it became clear to Sylvain that he wanted to work with the theme 'bicycle'. He sees it as a symbol for The Netherlands, but especially for his hometown Amsterdam. “Every tourist is amazed by the huge amount of bicycles here. It is something that really sticks with them. So I chose a sketched illustration, because it gives the vases a fresh and modern look which matches the new direction Heinen Delft Blue is taking: creating new traditions.”

Objects with a story

Sylvain is happy with the result. “I love objects with a story. The combination of Delft blue vases and the illustrations of the bicycles turns out to be a good match in style, function and storytelling about Amsterdam. I expect it will speak to many people.”

Sylvain Tegroeg graduated in 2013 at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Since his graduation he works there as a multidisciplinary designer, independently and on commission. Tegroeg is known for his detailed illustrations and landscapes, and his focus on product design and graphic design.
