Made-Lief Collection

Made-Lief is a collection born from our love for the craftsmanship of Delft blue. Creating and painting Delft blue pottery is a skill that has been passed down for over four hundred years by artisans and master painters, and has grown into a worldwide symbol of the Netherlands. It has even been recognized as cultural heritage. Our goal is to pass on the knowledge of this special craft to future generations, so that it will not be lost.

That is why this collection is 100% handmade in the Netherlands, ensuring that our beautiful craft can continue to exist. At Heinen Delfts Blauw, we mix the clay according to our own (secret) recipe, we make our own paint, and we carefully compose the perfect glaze. The liquid clay is poured into molds and then polished by our experienced craftsmen. After that, the master painters begin their work, decorating the blank vases with the most beautiful designs. In this way, we maintain full control over the quality of the final product and are able to create this beautiful item with care and dedication.

Master painter Isa Lagendijk designed and painted the new Made-Lief collection and explains how these special vases came to life.
“Polychrome traditionally has a fairly fixed color palette,” says master painter Isa Lagendijk. “Within our existing range, these colors are often somewhat heavier and darker, giving them a more classic appearance. That’s why I started exploring how we could give polychrome a fresh, contemporary look, without losing its distinctive artisanal character.”

“My goal was to preserve the recognizable elements of the craft, while making the overall look lighter and more accessible—something that closely aligns with Heinen Delfts Blauw’s mission to renew traditions. I worked from our existing color palette and deliberately added only two new colors: a fresh lilac shade, which I developed together with our factory manager, and a deep red-orange tone that I also use in the Imari collection. These two colors in particular add more vibrancy to the design and create a beautiful balance between warm and cool tones.”
functional & decorative

Hand-painted Vases

The Made-Lief collection originally began with a series of Delft blue vases. Most Delft blue vases are filled with intricate details and busy decorations. For this collection, however, the art of minimalism has been applied. Each of these beautiful vases is hand-painted by the master painters of Heinen Delfts Blauw, with the subtle designs seeming to drape gracefully around the white porcelain.
Painting with new colors turns out to be quite an art in itself. “The collection is entirely hand-painted, which is also reflected in the subtle color gradations, especially in the lilac shades,” says Isa. “While painting, that color can sometimes be difficult to judge, because it only reaches its final hue after being fired in the oven. That’s what makes the process so interesting: you work based on intuition and experience.”

“For the shapes, I chose the existing Made-Lief vases from our collection, as they are already well received by customers. The decoration has therefore been deliberately kept just a bit simpler than the Delft blue version, so that the new colors can take center stage.”
Authentic and innovative

Vases with unique shapes

The Made-Lief collection was already very popular because the handmade vases combine highly functional shapes with decorative appeal. We deliberately chose these forms—such as the traditional bulb vase, the robust round vase, and the more modern square vase—to strike a balance between traditional and contemporary.

Thanks to the cheerful yet soft colors, the refined character of the Made-Lief collection is further enhanced. The result is a timeless vase that will remain admired for a lifetime.
