Let yourself be carried away into the wonderful world of illustrator Redmer Hoekstra. For Heinen Delfts Blauw, this humorous and philosophical artist created a unique series of decorative wall plates in which surreal animals, Delft blue elements and absurd situations come together. This set consists of three wall plates featuring three remarkable characters: a fish transporting its rabbits on wheels, a trudging beaver carrying party-loving penguins on its back, and an overloaded pelican surrounded by a group of mouse friends.
The dreamy illustrations are unmistakably Redmer Hoekstra. His animals find themselves in unexpected situations where nothing seems quite as it should. A fish stranded on dry land, yet still able to take its passengers to their destination thanks to a tiny wheel. Penguins travelling on the back of an unperturbed beaver while diving, sliding and celebrating along the way. And a pelican with a beak full of mice’s ears, seemingly on its way to a rather unusual high tea. The longer you look, the more details you discover and the more room there is for your own interpretation.
For Redmer, each illustration began with a Delft blue element from the Heinen Delfts Blauw collection. Around these elements, he created his own surreal world, giving each animal its own role and character. The physical discomfort experienced by his main characters is a recurring theme in his work and an important source of his humour.
Together, the three wall plates create a playful composition, but they can also be displayed individually. Combine them to create a surprising and humorous wall display filled with details to discover, or let a single illustration take centre stage as a distinctive piece of art.
