Description
A Delft blue wall plate made of ceramic. The wall plate is decorated with a dodo nestled among tropical ornamental birds. Its own dull feathers pale in comparison to all those colorful display feathers, but that is also partly its salvation. The beautiful feathers are eagerly plucked by shrewd 17th-century traders and brought to Europe aboard their merchant ships. Here, wealthy Dutch ladies are eager to buy a new shipment of feathers to adorn their traditional costumes even more luxuriously. At that time, the display feathers were already a popular decoration on Delft blue pottery. Father Jaap Heinen mainly painted in the elegant Imari style in the early years of his growing family business, and ornamental birds often played a leading role in his work.
