History of Delft blue pottery

Handbeschilderde vaas met bloemmotief in een mal Heinen Delfts Blauw

Genesis late 16th century

Delft blue emerges in late 16th century as an alternative to the expensive blue and white Chinese porcelain. Unlike Chinese porcelain, Delft blue is not made from Chinese clay, but of composite clays carefully painted and glazed. Another craft; genuinely Dutch.

Revaluation for Delft blue

In the heyday of Delft blue there were dozens of active pottery factories. Over the course of centuries, almost all of them closed. For a long time Delftware was mainly purchased by international tourists. But, in more recent years, Delftware has regained its value in the Netherlands, especially because younger people love to enrich their decor with it.

Delftware in the 21st century

Heinen Delfts Blauw keeps the craft alive. With one foot in tradition and the other foot planted firmly in the present. We bring Delftware into the 21st century. With new designs and shapes. So, we are working on our mission: creating new traditions.
